Students in LMU's signature M.A. in English program have the unique opportunity to specialize in one of three distinct tracks of study: Literature, Creative Writing, or Rhetoric and Composition. By offering three emphases, the program addresses the needs of diverse students – scholars planning to pursue doctoral studies, writers seeking to hone their creative craft in pursuit of publication, educators at both the high school and college level wishing to advance their knowledge in the field, and professionals working to cultivate critical reading and writing skills applicable to careers in the private and public sectors.
The Literature Emphasis offers a range of coursework centered on literary traditions. In addition to a strong background in major periods, authors, and genres, it offers innovative classes on topics that have included: The Anthropocene, Black Futurity, Survivalism, The Feminist Critique, and more.
The Composition and Rhetoric Emphasis offers a range of coursework centered on media literacy, argumentation, and linguistics—preparing students to be versatile and effective writers. The emphasis offers innovative classes on topics that have included: The Idea of Vernacular, Rhetoric and the Media, The Confession, Metaphor: Theory and Practice, and more.
The Creative Writing Emphasis offers a range of coursework providing students with creative and critical frameworks to develop their writing and analytical skills. In addition to strong fiction and poetry workshops, the emphasis offers innovative classes that have included: The Personal Essay, Constraint Based Writing, Writing for the Stage and Screen, and more.
